Monkey and I recently had the chance to try out a Brainy Kit. What is a Brainy Kit? Watch our Brainy Box review for more info. Not into videos? That’s cool too. This written review starts after the jump.
DISCLAIMER: I was sent this subscription box free for reviewing purposes. Other than receiving a free product I have not been compensated for my review. This review is my honest opinion of the Transportation Brainy Kit.
This review will be split into 4 different sections:
- Company/Product Summary
- Ease of Use
- Resource Quality
Viktoria Altman, President of Brainy Kit, and its original physical locations, Brainy Academy created the subscription box service to bring Brainy Academy into the home. Brainy Academy is a Montessori school for little ones ages 2-4. They also offer tutoring programs for kids in Kindergarten through Second grades.
Brainy Kit is a monthly Montessori subscription box geared towards homeschooling families of students ages 4-9. Each box includes a lesson plan book that organizes the physical resources provided in the box in an easy to understand unit study based on the theme of the box. In our case the theme was transportation.
Shipping of your Brainy Kit is free. Ours was shipped via USPS priority mail and arrived within 3 business days. I love that the kit is not shipped in a branded box. Branded boxes tend to lead to packages being stolen more often or not returned of delivered to the wrong address.
Ease of Use
Thanks to the lesson plan manual included in the box, getting started with the lessons is extremely easy. Getting a lesson setup took me about 5 minutes. Each lesson utilizes at least one item from the box, and sometimes extra standard school supplies such as construction paper, scissors , glue, etc.
The lesson plans are written in a clear easy to understand manner. Like a lot of teacher edition textbooks, ideas for introducing the lesson, what to say and differentiated activities are includeed in each lesson. Using the lesson plan manual made teaching the lesson simple, and my 4 year-old son was eager to learn more. Worksheets are also included in the lesson plan book. By the end of the first lesson, he had done a matching activities, learned how air, land, and water and transportation go together, and learned a few new terms. His favorite being the word transporation.
Our lessons lasted ten to fifteen minutes on average. That is the perfect amount of time for lessons with Monkey. Anything longer than that, I tend to lose his attention.
The quality of resources in this box are amazing. Some of the resources like the laminated posters and Melissa and Doug vehicle magnets can be reused for playtime or a mini lesson review.
If you are looking for Montessori materials for your homeschool or you just want to have more hands-on activities for younger homeschool students I highly recommend purchasing from Brainy Kit. Kids will love getting a box just for them in the mail, and parents have an easy to use learning resource.
